India already has legislation to protect women in the workplace – even those in the informal sector. Yet it is rarely implemented, and this leaves women in danger.

“For women like me, what is #MeToo? Poverty and stigma mean we can never speak out. There is no place safe for women like us. Not our workplaces, nor our homes, and not the road we take.”

This chilling quote is from Shalini, a female domestic worker in Guragon, who endured months of sexual harassment from a security guard in the building where she worked. Every morning she writes down the addresses and phone numbers of the houses where she’ll be working, so her family knows where she is at all times. It’s all she can do.
