Working From Home: why it can make you miss the office

Working from home has its pros and cons

Millions of people have switched to remote working since the start of the pandemic. But many find that their productivity has gone down, while their stress and anxiety levels have gone up.

Covid-19 has changed the way we live – and for some people, those changes may outlast the pandemic. Millions of people in India, as well as other parts of the world, have started working from home instead of going out to the office.

Some offices may never reopen. Most call centres in India switched to remote working during the first lockdown in March 2020, and now around one third say that they plan to keep their staff working from home indefinitely.

Of course, this only applies to people in the IT sector or other white-collar jobs. For manual workers, those in the service industry, and many others, it’s simply impossible to work remotely. Only 11% of households in India have a computer, and only 24% have internet connection.

Nonetheless, this is a significant proportion of the population; the IT sector in particular is a central part of the Indian economy which employs over four million people. There are increasing numbers of jobs that only require access to a computer and an internet connection. With these two things, it’s possible to work from home, or from anywhere in the world.

There are obvious benefits for companies, as this cuts the cost of keeping an office running. For employees, too: no one will miss the daily commute. Yet there are also some serious concerns about how this will affect our work culture, particularly when it comes to productivity and mental health.
