2020 has made us reconsider our relationship with the natural world. It’s not too late to put people and planet before profit.

Looking back on the past year, 2020 proved to be a year of hardship and unrest like no other. As we hope that 2021 will bring better news, it’s important to remember some of the positive change that came out of the last twelve months.

India has made its mark as a global leader in scientific research, with its work on the vaccine for Covid-19, and peaceful mass demonstrations have brought the country together – from the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act to the farmers’ movement.

Yet perhaps the most significant change will be in our awareness of our environment. The coronavirus showed us all too clearly that we do not control the natural world; a new virus can change everything for human life on a global scale. Environmental destruction and the loss of biodiversity makes pandemics more likely. As such, 2020 may be the wake-up call we needed to take action to improve our relationship with the natural world.

We need to heed the warnings, and remain hopeful that change is possible. Here are five stories of hope from around the country.
