The police are supposed to protect us. In India, we need to be protected against them.

When is it acceptable for the police to use force against civilians?

Surely only in exceptional circumstances, if the civilians in question are themselves using violence and cannot be restrained by any other means. Yet the use of force by the police in India has become so widespread and so extreme that “force” is an inappropriate word: it is police violence, brutality, and assault. In some cases it is state-sanctioned murder.

A recent report showed that an average of five people die in police custody in India every single day.
